Dhanteras 2022- why is Dhanteras Festival celebrated

Dhanteras Festival

One of India’s most important festivals is Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Triodasi. Goddess Laxmi is worshipped during this occasion in order to grant her followers luck and success in life. Dhanteras is a unique occasion where gold, silver, or even a brand-new utensil is bought as a lucky charm. The auspicious event of Dhanteras is highly revered and enthusiastically observed in the Indian business sector. Dhanteras, which is celebrated two days before Diwali, brings in a season of joyful celebration.

The terms “Dhan” (which means wealth) and “Teras,” which means thirteenth, are combined to form the name of the Dhanteras celebration. Every year, on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin (October/November), Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, occurs. This event is often observed two days before Diwali.

What is the Dhanteras festival like?

On this day, houses, workplaces, or places of commerce are renovated and embellished. To welcome the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, entrances are decorated with stunning traditional Rangoli designs. With rice flour and vermilion powder, tiny footprints are painted all over the houses as a sign of the entrance of Goddess Laxmi. For the duration of the night, little clay diyas are lit to ward off evil spirits.

The Dhanteras holiday is seen as luck for investing in new jewelry, silverware, and other items. Devotees purchase new jewelry, automobiles, and even homes, and wedding dates are also set on this day. In the evening, “Lakshmi-Puja” is performed while devotional songs (“Bhajans”) are sung in honor of Goddess Laxmi, and “Naivedya,” a sweet offering to the Goddess, is also made. Cattle are ornamented and venerated on this day because they are revered in villages as sacred animals and incarnations of Laxmi.

On this day, people worship Lord Yamaraj, the deity of death, and light a “Yama-Diya” at night to beg for His blessing on them with wealth, well-being, and protection. On the day of Dhanteras, individuals buy new kitchenware, coins made of silver or gold, or other precious metals as a lucky charm. This custom is also connected to the Dhanvantari Trayodashi festival celebrations. The Dhanteras holiday is very significant to the Western Indian business community. Dry coriander seeds are lightly pounded with jaggery as part of an odd Maharashtrian tradition known as Naivedya. Because they are their primary source of revenue and subsistence, farmers in rural areas revere their cattle.

The Dhanteras honors Dhanvantari, the god-physician who came from the ocean carrying the elixir of life preservation during the epic “samudra manthan” incident. Dhanvantari is credited with teaching mankind about Ayurveda and its therapeutic methods.
